Common Steel Pipe Sizes, Weights & Uses

Use this quick-reference table to estimate pipe weight and match the right diameter to your project. Weights are for standard ASTM A53 Schedule 40 black steel pipe (galvanized pipe is approximately 2–3% heavier due to the zinc coating).

Note on pipe vs. tubing: Steel pipe is sized by nominal pipe size (NPS) and schedule (wall thickness), with the OD held constant for each NPS. Structural tubing (square, rectangular, round HSS) is sized by actual OD and wall thickness. If your print calls out “2” pipe,” that’s NPS — the actual OD is 2.375″. If it calls out “2” round tube,” that’s the OD. Ask if you’re not sure which one you need — we can source both.

Cut-to-Length & Pipe Processing

Bring us your cut list — we’ll handle the rest. Our Apopka yard cuts pipe to length in-house, so most orders ship same-day or next-day.

  • Saw cutting — clean, square cuts on every diameter we stock
  • Torch cutting — for heavier and larger-diameter pipe
  • Drilling and notching — on request for handrail and fence fabrication

No job is too small. Need three 18-inch pieces of 2″ galvanized for a railing repair? We’ll cut them while you wait.

Black Pipe vs. Galvanized Pipe

Both are ASTM A53 Schedule 40 steel pipe — same dimensions, same load-bearing properties. The difference is the finish.

  • Black steel pipe has a mill scale finish (dark gray/black). It’s used indoors, for structural fabrication that will be painted or coated, and for natural gas lines.
  • Galvanized steel pipe is hot-dipped in zinc after manufacture, giving it a silvery, textured finish. It resists rust and is the standard choice for outdoor work in Florida’s humid, salt-air climate — fence posts, handrails, agricultural use, and water lines.

For Central Florida outdoor projects, galvanized almost always wins on lifespan. For shop fabrication that gets primed and painted, black pipe is fine and usually less expensive.

Steel Pipe FAQ

What's the difference between Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 steel pipe?

Schedule refers to wall thickness. For any given nominal size, Schedule 80 has a thicker wall than Schedule 40, so the outside diameter is the same but the inside diameter is smaller. Schedule 40 is the standard for fencing, handrails, structural posts, and general fabrication. Schedule 80 is used where extra wall thickness or strength is required.

No. Steel pipe is sized by nominal pipe size (NPS), which is a label — not a measurement. The actual outside diameter of “2-inch” Schedule 40 pipe is 2.375″. This is consistent across all schedules of the same nominal size, so fittings interchange.

ASTM A53 Schedule 40 2″ steel pipe weighs approximately 3.65 pounds per linear foot. A standard 21-foot length weighs about 77 pounds. Galvanized pipe is roughly 2–3% heavier due to the zinc coating.

Yes. We stock hot-dip galvanized Schedule 40 in all common diameters, including the sizes most often used for chain link fence posts (1-3/8″, 1-5/8″, 2-3/8″, 2-7/8″, 4″) and ornamental iron work.

Yes. We run saw and torch cutting at our Apopka yard. Bring a cut list and most orders go out the same day or next day.

No — we don’t offer pipe threading. We cut pipe to length in-house, but threading isn’t a service we provide.

Pipe is sized by nominal pipe size (NPS) and schedule — the dimensions are standardized so fittings interchange. Tubing is sized by actual outside diameter and wall thickness, and it’s used where the dimension itself matters (handrails, frames, mechanical work). Pipe is for conveying fluids and gases or for structural use where standard fittings matter; tubing is for fabrication where the OD is the design dimension.

No. You can buy a single stick or a full bundle at the same competitive pricing. This is one of the main reasons Central Florida fence builders and small shops choose us.

Yes. We offer next-day delivery across the Central Florida region — Orlando, Apopka, Winter Garden, Sanford, Kissimmee, Lakeland, and surrounding counties. You can also pick up at our Apopka yard during business hours.
