Angle Iron in Orlando, FL

Angle iron is structural steel shaped like an “L.” Two flat legs meet at a 90-degree angle, creating a profile that’s simple but remarkably strong.

You’ll find it holding up everything from building frames and machinery platforms to trailer builds and shop workbenches. It’s one of the most versatile materials in metal fabrication.

We stock angle iron in sizes from 3/4″ x 1/8″ up to 9″ x 4″ x 3/4″ with standard lengths of 20 feet. See our full metals inventory or call for current stock and pricing.

Benefits of Angle Iron

The L-shape isn’t just for looks. That 90-degree geometry distributes load efficiently and resists bending better than flat bar. You get structural strength without the weight of solid stock. Plus, the two mounting surfaces make it easy to bolt, weld, or attach to other materials.

Hot-rolled steel angle is the standard. The manufacturing process creates slightly rounded edges and a surface that welds cleanly. It’s strong, cost-effective, and handles typical fabrication work without special treatment.

Common uses for angle iron:

  • Structural framing and supports
  • Machinery bases and platforms
  • Trailer frames and beds
  • Shelving and racking systems
  • Bracing and reinforcement
  • Custom fabrication projects

Benefits of Angle Iron

Equal leg angle

Equal leg angle has two sides of the same length – 2″ x 2″, 3″ x 3″, etc. This is what most people mean when they say “angle iron.” It’s the standard for general fabrication and structural work.

Unequal leg angle

Unequal leg angle has different length sides – 3″ x 2″, 5″ x 3″, 6″ x 4″, etc. These work when you need more contact area on one surface or want the load distributed unevenly. Less common but useful for specific applications.

We stock both types.
Most of our inventory is equal leg since that covers the majority of projects.

Angle Iron Sizes and Thickness

Angle iron sizes are listed as leg length x leg length x thickness. So 2″ x 2″ x 1/4″ means both legs are 2 inches and the material is 1/4 inch thick.

Hot-rolled steel angle is the standard. The manufacturing process creates slightly rounded edges and a surface that welds cleanly. It’s strong, cost-effective, and handles typical fabrication work without special treatment.

Common sizes we stock:

  • Light duty: 1″ x 1″ x 1/8″ to 2″ x 2″ x 1/4″
  • Medium duty: 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ x 1/4″ to 4″ x 4″ x 3/8″
  • Heavy duty: 5″ x 5″ x 1/2″ and larger

Thicker material handles heavier loads but weighs more and costs more per foot. For most construction and fabrication work, 1/8″ to 3/8″ thickness covers what you need.

What to Consider

Project requirements:

Match the size to your load. Overkill wastes money; undersized angle fails under load. If you’re not sure, our team can help you figure out what works.

Welding vs. bolting:

Angle iron welds easily, but if you’re bolting, make sure your leg width gives you room to drill holes without weakening the material.

Rust protection:

Hot-rolled steel will rust if exposed to weather. For outdoor use, either prime and paint it or step up to galvanized steel.

Cutting and handling:

Larger angles get heavy fast. An 8″ x 8″ x 1″ angle weighs 51 pounds per foot. Plan your cuts and have help for the heavy stuff.

Working With Angle Iron

Most fabrication shops can cut angle iron to length. If you’re doing it yourself, a chop saw or band saw works for smaller sizes. Heavier material needs an abrasive cutoff saw or torch.

For drilling, clamp it securely and use a good center punch. The rounded inside corner can make drill bits wander if you’re not careful.

Welding is straightforward – just make sure surfaces are clean. The inside corner provides a natural backing for fillet welds.

When to Use Angle Iron

  • Construction: Building frames, supports, lintels, stair stringers, balcony railings
  • Manufacturing: Machine guards, equipment bases, conveyor supports, workstation frames
  • Agricultural: Livestock gates, equipment attachments, barn reinforcement
  • Automotive/Trailer: Trailer frames, truck bed modifications, equipment racks
  • DIY/Home: Workbenches, shelving, garden structures, furniture frames
